Nashik is located in northern Maharashtra on the bank of the Godavari River, about 185 km from Mumbai and 115 km from Pune. It derives its name from the Sanskrit word nasika, meaning nose. According to legends Laxman chopped off Shrupnakha nose, here in Nashik. Here Ram spent major part of his 14-year exile. Nashik is regarded as a major pilgrim center for Hindus in Western India.
